After a 3-4 start, Olympiacos has won 7 of its last 9 games to rank fifth in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague Regular Season standings with a 10-6 record. An adjustment period was needed with several new players and a new coach, David Blatt, but once they found their rhythm, the Reds have been able to down teams like Real Madrid, Anadolu Efes Istanbul and, most recently, Panathinaikos OPAP Athens in the Greek derby. One player dominated the game, none other than Olympiacos center Nikola Milutinov, who finished the derby with 18 points, 18 rebounds and a PIR of 41. In…

I don’t know about anyone else, but Buducnost VOLI Podgorica – which hosts league-leading Fenerbahce BEKO Istanbul in the Round 14 Game of the Week tonight – is starting to remind me a bit of other Balkan underdogs that we’ve seen before in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague. I am thinking of those memorable Partizan NIS Belgrade teams that started knocking off superpowers at home at the end of last decade and ended up playing two overtime games at the 2010 Final Four in Paris. And I am thinking of the Crvena Zvezda mts Belgrade teams that followed the same route…

In one of the biggest surprises in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague this season, Buducnost VOLI Podgorica edged previously undefeated CSKA Moscow 93-92 in the Montenegrin capital last week. Buducnost played a great all-around game, but none of it would have happened without Danilo Nikolic’s final basket, a revere, put-back, go-ahead layup with 5.4 seconds left. Nikolic finished the game with 14 points on 4-of-7 three-point shooting, but it was his closest basket of the night that will be remembered most by Buducnost fans. Despite coming off the bench and playing less than 13 minutes per game, Nikolic is averaging 6.3…

Ante Tomic comes off a historic week in which he made EuroLeague history with his 950th two-point basket, which made him the competition’s career leader in that category. At 31 years of age, the FC Barcelona Lassa center is aging well. The club appointed him team captain this season after the retirement of EuroLeague Legend Juan Carlos Navarro and he has responded by averaging a career-best 14.2 points per game. He has excelled as Barcelona has won three games in a row, but is now gearing up for a test with the team’s next three games coming against teams that…

Zalgiris Kaunas has had a great eye for point guards in recent years thanks in part to its coach, Sarunas Jasikevicius, who is one of the best playmakers in European basketball history. The next name on a long list of great Zalgiris guards is Nate Wolters, who is off to a superb start in his second EuroLeague season. Wolters has averaged 17.0 points per game on excellent shooting percentages (68% 2FG, 50% 3FG) plus 6.0 assists in three games thus far. His average performance index rating of 20.7 ranks fifth overall in the competition. Wolters was a college basketball star as South…

A great start of the season, both individually and as a team, has earned Walter “Edy” Tavares the award as the MVP for October in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague. As always, defense was his greatest strength; Tavares averaged 9.5 points and 3 blocks per game in October. Added up, his numbers gave Tavares a 19.5 performance index rating, which was sixth-best in the competition, while on a per-minute basis, he was third with a prorated PIR of 35.4 over 40 minutes. Madrid’s great offense (96.5 ppg., on track to be the best in competition history) starts with strong defense and that is…

Right before the game between FC Barcelona Lassa and Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv of Round 5 of the regular season, Euroleague Basketball CEO and President Jordi Bertomeu, awarded EuroLeague Legend Juan Carlos Navarro with a trophy that read “2000-2018 MVP” to honor a once-in-a-lifetime career with Barcelona. Navarro, who retired last summer after 21 seasons as a player – 20 of them with Barcelona – is the current EuroLeague scoring king and won two EuroLeagues with Barcelona, in 2003 and 2010. Bertomeu also presented Navarro with the official scoresheet from his first game in the competition, a road win for…

When Zalgiris clashes with Fenerbahce Istanbul on Friday, it will not be just an ordinary game night in the basketball-crazy Kaunas. It’s true that the game is a rematch of last year’s semifinal between them, which Fenerbahce won to end Zalgiris’s quest for its first continental title in 19 years. But it will also be a special occasion for a hometown hero and Zalgiris team captain Paulius Jankunas. The veteran power forward, playing his 16th season in the competition, will make his 300th EuroLeague appearance on Friday, becoming just the fourth player to reach that milestone. What’s more, Jankunas is…
